Root-cause care

We look beyond symptom suppression.

Our providers investigate the biological and environmental influences that may be contributing to a child’s presentation. When medication is appropriate, we use it thoughtfully, within a broader plan designed to address underlying drivers, support function, and improve long-term health.

“The goal is not simply to manage symptoms, but to understand the biology shaping them.”

— Ari Calhoun, ND, FMAPS

Wondering whether Wholesome Brain Medicine is the right fit?

Our Patient Coordinator will answer your questions and guide you through the next steps.

Telehealth consultations are available to patients located in California, Montana, Arizona, and Oregon.

A systems-oriented model

Complex children rarely fit into a single box.

Neurodevelopment, behavior, mood, attention, sleep, sensory regulation, immune function, gastrointestinal health, energy metabolism, genetics, and environmental influences can interact in meaningful ways. We organize the full picture, identify patterns and priorities, and develop a plan that is clinically rigorous, individualized, and realistic for family life.

01

A whole-child assessment

We connect developmental and mental health history, symptoms, medical complexity, environmental exposures, nutrition, genetics, prior testing, and treatment response.

02

A prioritized roadmap

Recommendations are sequenced so families know what matters now, what can wait, and how progress will be measured.

03

Thoughtful testing and treatment

Testing is selected for clinical relevance, and treatment may include nutrition, supplements, lifestyle strategies, and medication when appropriate.

04

Education and ongoing refinement

Families receive detailed visit summaries and educational resources, while care plans evolve with response, tolerance, and emerging evidence.

A unified clinical team

Your child benefits from more than one perspective.

Every Wholesome Brain Medicine clinician is a MAPS-trained provider. We work from a shared clinical framework and bring challenging cases to monthly all-provider case reviews, allowing the collective team to identify patterns, discuss options, and strengthen the plan of care.

Our clinicians share advanced training in the medical and biological complexities of autism and related neurodevelopmental conditions.

Monthly case reviews

All providers meet monthly to review challenging cases and contribute their clinical expertise.

Expert collaboration

When appropriate, we coordinate with outside physicians, specialists, laboratories, and other experts in the field.

Who We Serve

This may be the right fit if…

Our practice is designed for families who want depth, nuance, and a collaborative root-cause process.

  • Your child has autism, ADHD, developmental differences, anxiety, depression, a mood or conduct disorder, PANS/PANDAS, or a complex unresolved illness.
  • You want to understand immune, metabolic, gastrointestinal, genetic, neurological, and environmental contributors.
  • You value a holistic approach that supports healing from within rather than relying on symptom suppression alone.
  • You value an evidence-informed plan that may include nutrition, supplements, lifestyle strategies, and thoughtful medication use when appropriate.
  • You want a team that collaborates, educates, and continually refines care based on your child’s response.

When another path may serve you better

We may not be the best fit if you are seeking…

Symptom management alone

Our care is designed to investigate root causes and contributing biology—not only suppress symptoms.

Insurance-directed care

We are a private-pay practice and do not allow insurance limitations to direct clinical decisions.

In-person care

We are a virtual clinic serving patients who are physically located in California, Oregon, Montana, or Arizona at the time of their visit.

Geographic Fit

At this time, our telehealth consultations are available to patients located in California, Montana, Arizona, and Oregon.

The care experience

Individualized care takes time, depth, and thoughtful attention to every detail.

Initial appointments are 90 minutes so your clinician can review the history, synthesize prior records, identify priorities, and create a personalized starting plan.

  • Initial Appointment: 90 minutes
  • Follow-up visits: 25–60 minutes
  • Detailed written visit summaries
  • Educational resources to help families understand the plan
  • Monthly all-provider case review for challenging cases
  • Collaboration with outside clinicians and other experts when appropriate

Fees vary by clinician and visit length. Testing, supplements, medications, and outside care are separate. While healing is an investment, we work closely with families to customize treatment plans and care to fit their budget.

Questions, answered

New patient FAQs

What happens during the discovery call?

You will speak with our Patient Coordinator, who can answer questions about our providers, care model, process, availability, pricing, and next steps. It is not a medical appointment and does not include individualized treatment recommendations.

Who may not be a good fit for the practice?

We may not be the right fit for families seeking symptom management without a root-cause investigation, insurance-directed care, or in-person services. Wholesome Brain Medicine is a virtual clinic.

Do you use prescription medication?

Yes, when appropriate. Medication may be a valuable part of care, but we use it thoughtfully within a broader plan rather than relying on symptom suppression alone.

How does the team approach work?

All of our clinicians are MAPS providers and share a unified clinical framework. The full provider team meets monthly to review challenging cases, and we collaborate with outside experts when appropriate.

How do I communicate with my clinician between appointments?

Our clinicians answer patient messages between appointments, and there is no additional fee for routine communication. If a question requires more extensive review, clinical decision-making, or a change to the treatment plan, the team may recommend scheduling a follow-up visit.

How often are follow-up visits scheduled?

Most patients are seen every 8–12 weeks. Some children benefit from more frequent visits — typically every 2–6 weeks at the beginning of care — when symptoms are less stable or closer monitoring is needed, including some PANS/PANDAS cases.

Do you accept insurance?

Wholesome Brain Medicine is private-pay and does not bill insurance directly. A superbill may be available for eligible visits; reimbursement depends on your plan.

Where can patients be located?

We are a virtual clinic. Clinical telehealth visits are available when the patient is physically located in California, Oregon, Montana, or Arizona at the time of the appointment.

Do you provide urgent or emergency care?

No. For acute or potentially life-threatening symptoms, contact emergency services or seek immediate in-person care.
