About
We Believe:
Frequently, I come across parents who approach evaluations with apprehension, fearing the implications of a diagnosis. However, within my practice, the significance of a label pales in comparison to the child before me and the challenges they face. It’s essential to recognize that Autism and ADHD diagnoses hinge upon a constellation of symptoms.
Should these symptoms undergo modification or resolution, the child might cease to fulfill the diagnostic criteria. Within our practice, our focus rests on enhancing or mitigating these symptoms by pinpointing and addressing their underlying causes. The outcome? The once-significant label frequently loses its relevance.
When children grapple with tantrums, anxiety, or emotional dysregulation, the initial advice often centers around adjusting your parenting approach. While this guidance isn’t inherently flawed, it presupposes that the root of the “issue” lies within the parent’s methodology. In my experience, such an assumption rarely holds true. Mental health is as much a physiological matter as it is a psychological one.
In the vast majority of cases, an underlying factor disrupts the child’s capacity to respond suitably to emotional triggers. Subtle imbalances are present within all of us, with varying degrees of significance. A child’s recurrent tantrums or OCD behaviors serve as indicators that internal dysregulation might be at play. Requesting behavioral corrections from them may be premature if we have not yet thoroughly addressed and resolved the underlying root cause.
Be it Autism, Tics, Aggression, or OCD, conventional medicine often confines the issue to a brain-centered problem. While the disorder might exhibit itself within the brain, it’s crucial to recognize that the brain does not function in isolation from the rest of the body.
A wealth of research underscores the intricate interconnections between the brain’s functioning, mental and emotional state, and factors such as the microbiome, diet, environmental influences, immune system, and nutrient status.
Receiving an autism diagnosis or dealing with intense emotions on a daily basis can be profoundly overwhelming. As a parent, your utmost desire is for your child to realize their full potential, find tranquility, and enjoy a high quality of life.
I’m here to assure you that this is attainable, and I witness it every day in the children and families I work with.
The brain and body possess remarkable adaptability. While genetics have a role, both the internal and external environment play a significant part in shaping brain development and responses. This phenomenon is known as neuroplasticity—indicating the brain’s ability to rewire and establish new synaptic connections.
Regarding our mental and emotional state, neurotransmitters take center stage. These chemicals can also be influenced without resorting to medication, aiding a child in rediscovering a sense of calm amidst emotionally challenging situations.
