What to Expect
Your Journey with Us:
What the Process Looks Like
Your First Visit: Before Your Appointment
You’ll complete a comprehensive questionnaire about your child’s symptoms and health history. Your doctor will review this carefully—along with any past lab results—before you even walk in the door. This means when we meet, we’re ready to dive deep and make every minute count.
During Your Consultation: We Connect the Dots
This won’t feel like a typical doctor’s appointment. You won’t be rushed. You won’t be dismissed. You won’t leave with more questions than answers.
Instead, we’ll build a complete picture of your child’s health together—examining how different systems interact and influence each other. Think of it as detective work, where every clue matters.
We’ll explore your child’s complete health timeline, starting before birth:
- Pregnancy and birth factors that may have set the stage
- Developmental milestones and when things shifted
- Patterns you’ve noticed but couldn’t quite explain
- Past diagnoses, treatments tried, and what actually helped (or didn’t)
We’ll assess the key systems that drive brain and body function:
- Environmental Factors — What your child is exposed to matters. We’ll discuss toxins, mold, air and water quality, and other environmental influences that may be impacting their health.
- Nutrition — Not just what they eat, but how well they’re absorbing and using nutrients. We’ll identify patterns, deficiencies, and potential food reactions affecting their brain and body.
- Genetic Vulnerabilities — Your child’s genetic blueprint influences how they detoxify, handle inflammation, produce neurotransmitters, and develop neurologically. Understanding this helps us provide targeted support.
- Neurotransmitter Function — We’ll look at signs of imbalance affecting mood, focus, sleep, and behavior—and identify ways to restore optimal brain chemistry.
- Inflammation & Oxidative Stress — Brain inflammation and oxidative damage impact everything from attention to mood to energy. We’ll assess markers and develop strategies to cool the fire.
- Nervous System Regulation — Is your child’s nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight? We’ll evaluate stress response patterns, sleep quality, and how well they can shift between states of activation and rest.
- Gut Health — The gut-brain connection is real. We’ll examine microbiome balance, intestinal barrier function, and how gut issues may be driving neurological symptoms.
Throughout this conversation, we’re mapping everything to our clinical framework—identifying root causes and vulnerable systems, not just listing symptoms.
After Your Appointment: You’ll Have a Clear Path Forward
Within 48 hours, you’ll receive a detailed treatment summary that pulls it all together. This isn’t a generic handout—it’s a personalized roadmap that includes:
- Which lab tests will give us the most valuable information
- Dietary changes that make sense for your family
- Targeted supplements with clear explanations of why each one matters
- Lifestyle recommendations you can actually implement
- Prioritized next steps so you’re not overwhelmed
Our office team will coordinate lab ordering and schedule your follow-up. You’ll never feel like you’re navigating this alone.
The Healing Journey: What Happens Next
We Stay with You for the Long Haul
Most families meet with their doctor every 2–3 months, but this is flexible based on your child’s needs. Some children need closer monitoring during intensive phases of treatment. Others stabilize beautifully and only need check-ins every 5–6 months.
Because we practice personalized medicine, your schedule adapts to your child’s individual needs.
Progress Isn’t Always Linear (and That’s Okay)
Here’s what we want you to know: Healing isn’t a straight line.
The overall trajectory? Upward—toward better function, fewer symptoms, improved quality of life. But along the way, there will be bumps. An illness. A stressful week. An unexpected reaction. Growth spurts. Hormone shifts. Life.
When setbacks happen (and they do for everyone), we don’t abandon you. We help you understand what’s happening, adjust the plan, and get back on track as quickly as possible.
You’ll have support when you need it most.
Testing and Labs: Intentional and Strategic
We Don’t Run Every Test on Every Child
Our approach to testing is thoughtful and individualized. We order the labs that will give us the most clinically meaningful information for your child—not a standard panel we run on everyone.
Testing may include assessments for:
- Inflammation and immune dysregulation
- Nutrient deficiencies affecting brain and body function
- Mitochondrial or metabolic issues
- Gastrointestinal health and microbiome balance
- Environmental exposures (mold, heavy metals, toxins)
- Infectious triggers
- Genetic factors influencing detoxification, inflammation, and neurotransmitter function
Your doctor will help you prioritize which tests are most valuable and cost-effective for your situation. We’ll never order a test “just because.”
Results Are Just the Beginning
Once labs come back, we review them comprehensively—not just flagging highs and lows, but interpreting patterns and understanding why things are out of balance.
This is where our framework really shines: We’re looking for root causes, not just surface-level abnormalities. The goal is to understand the story your child’s body is telling us.
Diet and Lifestyle: The Foundation of Healing
Food Is Medicine (But It Has to Be Realistic)
Nutrition and daily rhythms form the foundation of your child’s healing journey. We’ll help you make dietary changes that reduce inflammation, stabilize blood sugar, support the gut microbiome, and provide the nutrients essential for brain health.
But here’s the thing: It has to work for your family.
We’re not going to hand you an impossible meal plan and expect perfection. Instead, we’ll work together on changes that are sustainable and meaningful.
This may include:
- Increasing nutrient density in the foods your child already eats
- Using therapeutic diets (ketogenic, gluten-free/casein-free, low histamine, low oxalate, or low glutamate) when clinically indicated
- Improving dietary diversity to optimize the microbiome
- Identifying and addressing food sensitivities or intolerances
Lifestyle Matters Just as Much
The everyday rhythms of your child’s life have profound impacts on their brain and body. We’ll discuss:
- Sleep optimization — because nothing else works well without good sleep
- Movement and play — in ways that support regulation, not just burn energy
- Time in nature — a powerful (and free) intervention
- Reducing environmental toxins — practical steps that make a difference
- Nervous system support — through connection, sensory input, and co-regulation
These might sound simple, but they’re often the interventions that create the most dramatic shifts over time.
Supplements and Medications: Strategic Support
Supplements Aren’t Just “Extras”
We use targeted supplementation to address underlying biochemical imbalances, reduce inflammation, and support your child’s brain and immune resilience.
Supplements may include nutrients that support:
- Mitochondrial function (your child’s cellular energy production)
- Micronutrient status and methylation (essential biochemical processes)
- Neurotransmitter balance (for mood, focus, and behavior)
- The gut-brain axis (because these two systems are deeply connected)
- Neuroimmune regulation (calming inflammatory responses)
Every recommendation comes with an explanation. You’ll understand what you’re giving and why it matters.
Medications When They‘re Needed
We’re not anti-medication. We’re anti-medication-as-the-only-option.
Pharmaceuticals are considered thoughtfully and used when clinically indicated—often as a bridge to stabilize symptoms while deeper healing occurs. When we recommend medication, we ensure it’s:
- Evidence-informed
- Age-appropriate
- Compatible with your child’s other treatments and therapies
- Part of a comprehensive plan, not a standalone solution
You’re Ready to Begin
We know starting this journey can feel overwhelming. You might be wondering: Is this really different? Will this actually help my child? Can I trust these people?
Here’s what we can promise you:
You will be heard. You will be respected. Your child will be seen as a whole person, not a collection of symptoms. We will work tirelessly to understand what’s driving their challenges and support their unique path to wellness. And most importantly: You won’t be doing this alone.
Hi, I’m Dr. Ari Calhoun, a perinatal and pediatric Naturopathic Doctor and mother of two. Upon becoming a mother, I realized just how susceptible our children’s brains are to environmental factors, including toxins, microbiome alterations, immune activation, nutrient imbalances, and more. More than that, I realized how much heartbreak and stress brain based disorders can cause for both the child and family. Since then, I’ve been on a mission to identify, prevent, and heal the underlying causes of neurodevelopment and mental health disorders in our children.
